A pore‐scale model based on measured particle size distributions has been used to quantify the changes in pore space geometry of packed soil columns resulting from a dilution in electrolyte concentration from 500 to 1 mmol l?1 NaCl during leaching. This was applied to examine the effects of particle release and re‐deposition on pore structure and hydraulic properties. Two different soils, an agricultural soil and a mining residue, were investigated with respect to the change in hydraulic properties. The mining residue was much more affected by this process with the water saturated hydraulic conductivity decreasing to 0·4% of the initial value and the air‐entry value changing from 20 to 50 cm. For agricultural soil, there was little detectable shift in the water retention curve but the saturated hydraulic conductivity decreased to 8·5% of the initial value. This was attributed to localized pore clogging (similar to a surface seal) affecting hydraulic conductivity, but not the microscopically measured pore‐size distribution or water retention. We modelled the soil structure at the pore scale to explain the different responses of the two soils to the experimental conditions. The size of the pores was determined as a function of deposited clay particles. The modal pore size of the agricultural soil as indicated by the constant water retention curve was 45 µm and was not affected by the leaching process. In the case of the mining residue, the mode changed from 75 to 45 µm. This reduction of pore size corresponds to an increase of capillary forces that is related to the measured shift of the water retention curve. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Study results in this paper have indicated that the Holocene climate in Xinjiang, Northwestem China has been alternating between wet and dry conditions, and was punctuated with a series of abrupt climate shifts. A sediment core taken from Barkol Lake in the northern Xinjiang of Northwest China was analyzed at 1 cm interval for grain-size distribution. Abrupt climate shifts revealed by the grain-size proxy occurred at ca 1.4, 3.0, 4.3, 5.6, 8.0 cal kyr B.E, which were well correlated to both the abrupt shifts recorded in the North Atlantic Ocean (NAO) and the Holocene sea surface temperature (SST) cooling events in the Arabian Ocean. The correlation indicated that the climatic changes in the extreme arid Northwest China were associated with the NAO, probably via the North Atlantic Oscillation-affected westerly winds. The strength and position of westerly winds probably modulated the Siberian-Mongolian high- pressure system (winter monsoon), and played an important role in climate change of Northwest China. Moreover, an evident drought interval during the middle Holocene was also revealed by grain-size proxy.  相似文献

The stomach contents of thin-lipped grey mullets Liza ramado were analysed in terms of granulometric composition and compared to the sediment of potential feeding areas in the Tagus estuary. Total organic matter (TOM) content and heavy metal content were determined in the surface sediment of three areas and eight trace elements were quantified: Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn. The three sampled areas did not differ in TOM; and the heavy metal content was below Effects Range-Low level for most elements. The mean observed concentrations were present in the following sequence: Zn > Pb > Cr > Cu ≈ Ni > Co > Cd > Hg. Stomach contents granulometric composition provided information about the feeding selectivity of the mullets. Sediment fractions with particle size between 20 and 50 μm are preferred, independently of the fishes' length. Smaller standard length (SL) fishes have a higher positive selection of fine grained sediments than those with a larger SL. Finer fractions usually have higher concentration of heavy metals, which makes younger specimens of the thin-lipped grey mullet potentially more exposed to heavy metal load in the estuary. Metal concentration was not independent from the sampling point, presenting higher values near the margins and the estuary tidal drainage system. This means that during the first period of each tidal cycle, the mullets will feed first on the most contaminated areas, as a consequence of their movement following the rising tide to feed on previously exposed areas.  相似文献

This short communication discusses an algorithm suited for the generation of periodic microstructures of granular media. Its particular features are a user‐defined grain size distribution, a representative volume element which is intrinsically periodic ab initio and a user‐defined termination criterion, controlled by an increase of volume fraction. For low densities our particle packings resemble fluids or gases, while we aim to reach for rather dense particle packings, similar to granular solids. The generated microstructures can thus be readily incorporated into large multiscale simulations, e.g. on the integration point level of a finite element analysis of a particular sand or concrete. The individual grain size distribution of the granular medium is incorporated through the introduction of different growth rates governing the final particle size distribution. We briefly sketch the generation of the representative volume element within a serial event‐driven scheme and demonstrate how periodic boundary conditions are ensured throughout the representative volume element generation process. The potential of the suggested algorithm will be illustrated through the generation of two different periodic multi‐disperse microstructures. They are based on different given grain size distributions, one for a quartz sand with a low non‐uniformity index and one for concrete aggregates classified as A32 by the German standard norm DIN 1045 to have a rather large variation in grain size. 利用2004年夏季台湾海峡南部海域的现场激光粒度仪剖面测量数据,运用海洋食物链的粒径谱理论,分析了悬浮颗粒物的Sheldon谱图和正态化谱图的剖面分布精细结构。横跨台湾海峡沿岸及浅滩外斜上升流的A和B两断面Sheldon粒径谱类型相近,正态化谱图的斜率r的范围从-0.79到-0.65,在明显高于寡营养海域的水平上波动。斜率r的高值带或高变幅带,在上升流系高叶绿素带及叶绿素最大层的周边或前端的呈斑状分布。海洋食物链的粒径谱分析结果支持关于台湾海峡南部上升流生态系高生产力、短食物链和高营养转换效率的宏观认识,并深化对营养转换效率分布精细结构的了解。现场激光粒度仪可发展为探索海洋食物链时空分布精细结构的常备传感器。  相似文献

在2006年3月,从湛江乌石养殖的华贵栉孔扇贝群体随机挑选100只个体作为亲本建立了基础群体。在2006年10月,从基础群体分别选择大、小个体构成两个子群体,比较了这两个子群体在不同温度时的淀粉酶和纤维素酶活力的差异。在20℃时,两个子群体的淀粉酶活力差异不显著(P>0.05);在25℃和30℃时,大个体子群体的淀粉酶活力显著大于小个体子群体的淀粉酶活力(P<0.05)。在20、25和30℃时,大个体子群体的纤维素酶活力显著大于小个体子群体的纤维素酶活力(P<0.05)。这些说明华贵栉孔扇贝的淀粉酶和纤维素酶活力与生长性状相一致。  相似文献

根据形态学梯度理论:不同尺寸的结构元素适合不同空间尺度的特征提取,结构元素尺寸的过大或者过小都会达不到最佳的特征边缘提取效果,从结构元素的尺寸δ与海洋锋横断面宽度γ和海流流幅的空间尺度λ的理论关系图推导中,提出δ,γ和λ的最佳定量关系:δ=γ/2,且δ<=λ/2,旨在对海洋锋形态特征进行提取。最后,以黑潮和墨西哥湾流为实验数据,进行海洋锋形态特征的自动提取,实验结果表明该定量关系的正确性和有效性。  相似文献
